Teachers matter. Whether they were good or bad, your teachers helped shape who you are. Now’s your chance to make a significant, positive difference in the world by helping future students start on the road to success.

Our program features the many disciplines that make up the world of "social studies." Students build a solid foundation in history with supporting courses in anthropology, economics, geography, political science, and sociology, while simultaneously completing coursework in educational theory and practice culminating in a student teaching experience.

Education: Social Studies & History

"One of my favorite courses I took was American Immigration. Not only did we analyze how immigration impacted America in the past and the present, but we also did a Service-Learning Project where the infographics we created about the Matewan Massacre were used for an exhibit in a museum.
As someone double majoring in Social Studies and history, I know that the knowledge I have gained from NKU's Department of History will not only impact me, but all the students I have in my future classrooms. By documenting and recounting history, humankind seeks to understand itself by examining the actions of those who came before the present generation."

  • Content Excellence: Social Studies teachers must demonstrate superior content knowledge to be competitive in the job market. Our program is set up to enable you to double-major in history and show high school principals that you are the right choice for them.
  • Hands-on Learning: On your way to teaching certification, you will have opportunities to observe and teach in several different schools. These experiences help you develop in ways the college classroom can’t.
  • Career Connections: NKU has more and better connections with local schools and districts than any other university in the region. In addition to knowledge for and experience in the classroom, you’ll leave with valuable connections to help land that first job.
