Oh, the places you'll go!

The English Department encourages students to seek out study abroad opportunities as early and as often as they can. It is relatively easy to fit these courses into your graduation requirements, and the opportunity to study texts on their own soil is invaluable.

The Department of English regularly hosts study abroad programs taught by our very own faculty. These can be in any of the English tracks, and count for credit toward your degree.

In addition to what our department runs, you can go on trips with classes through CCSA or KIIS.

Students will have the opportunity to write poetry and fiction in Ireland as well as visit locations discussed in both contemporary and canonical Irish poems and fiction, such as Yeats' tower, Heaney's bog people, Higgins' holy wells, Boland's potato famine walls, and the various literary sites in Dublin, Galway, Connemara, and Western Ireland. Students will journal about their experiences during the day (on location and en route) and will share their writing at night next to peat fires in hotels and pubs. They will revise their work when they return to the States for final grades as well as provide a public reading of their creative work that will be sponsored by Friends of Steely Library.

Cooperative Center for Study Abroad (CCSA)

Programs through CCSA are entirely English-speaking and are great for first time travelers. Students can go on Summer or Winter trips and take credit-bearing courses with faculty from local schools.

Kentucky Institute for International Studies (KIIS)

KIIS takes students to countries that are not primarily English-speaking, and therefore their trips often require at least a basic level of fluency. This also means that there is a much greater variety of countries that students can visit through KIIS.

Summer School in Ireland

Maynooth University offers an International Summer School from July 6-August 3, 2019. Scholarships are available through the program as well as through NKU's Office of Education Abroad.

If you're interested in a more immersive, long-term experience than a summer or winter class, you might check out an exchange program. These are full semester or year programs where you will be taking a full course load in a country of your choice.

Isn't study abroad expensive?

No!

Going abroad will never be less expensive than it is when you're a student. Year after year, students find that their semesters abroad are as expensive, if not less expensive, than staying at NKU for the same time.
