Parker Kain found his home in the Honors College at NKU.
“The Honors College was a way for me to step out of my usual comfort areas and explore topics I wouldn’t get to talk about in other classes.”
In fact, Parker stepped out of his comfort zone during his sophomore year when he took a class that partnered with local businesses. His team worked with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center on a project that involved children who had been diagnosed with an Acute Kidney Injury, which can develop into Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)—a potentially fatal diagnosis.
“Our group was tasked with looking at the hospital’s data to determine what factors put children at risk to develop CKD. Over the course of the 16-week course, we traveled to Children’s to meet with doctors, received coaching from our professors and eventually presented our findings to a doctor at Children’s. This project was extremely fulfilling, both for allowing me to work on my technical skills, but also to work with a local company doing a project that felt like it mattered.”
Parker’s experiences both in and out of the classroom have led him to complete two summer internships with the company 84.51º. He hopes to continue working in the area of data analytics upon graduation from NKU.
